Doing It Yourself (DIY)

Today’s business owner is in the fortunate position of self sufficiency in many areas. Thanks to computers and easy to use software you have the ability to do more from the comfort of your own home or office. The secret is finding the balance between the time and money required to design your own material and knowing your skill set. For example, perhaps you can do your own record keeping but find it wise to hire an accountant to file your taxes.

For years, successful business people have said that they are as familiar with their weaknesses as they are with their strengths. Use your time to do what you do best.

When it comes to branding, success will be achieved when you:

Capitalize on your abilities. You can save $$ if you:

  • create a list of emotion/attitude words that describe the values of your company
  • analyze your competition, both the good and the bad
  • are persistent, as brand recognition occurs with frequency of exposure
  • abide by policies that are conducive to the image you wish to convey
  • use templates that have been custom designed for you
  • are consistent in your visual communications

Recognize your weaknesses.

Find someone to help create a logo/identity that is well designed for technical and aesthetic purposes and that is timeless to provide a solid business image. DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, use clipart for your logo. Unless you are an artist or a designer you should hire someone to create your logo. You may also want to hire someone to:

  • develop a plan that invites the highest return for your promotional dollars
  • build templates for daily correspondence to provide you with more design independence (ie letterhead)
  • produce key items to avoid unpolished pieces (ie business cards, brochures, presentation folders)
  • write copy for advertisements, websites & brochures
